John Graham Primary recognises the importance that music has in a child’s development. The school offers learners the opportunity to explore their musical talent through our music programme. Children who learn to play an instrument or are part of an ensemble, can learn a valuable lesson in discipline and teamwork. With the encouragement from our experienced teachers and from their parents, learners playing a musical instrument can build pride and confidence.
ENSEMBLES, EXTERNAL EXAMS AND EISTEDDFODS
Learners who show potential would be encouraged to join the different ensembles and to enter for external examinations (Guildhall Trinity College of London) and the Cape Town Eisteddfod.
Many of our music pupils perform at our concerts and assemblies throughout the year.
CHOIR
Most learners don’t imagine they will ever perform in front of an audience, and to experience this for the first time as part of a choir can be a wonderful experience.
Joining the choir is an opportunity for learners to escape the daily stresses.
Learners are encouraged to audition for placement in the choir at the start of each year.
Rehearsals are on a Friday from 11:25 – 12:05
INSTRUMENTAL TUITION
Applications are assessed before being accepted into the music programme.
All music lessons take place during the school day. Learners would need to leave the classroom to attend a music lesson. The learner would need to be able to independently catch up on or complete the work done while at their music lesson. The learner’s academic teachers will be consulted before the learner is placed.
Learners who are accepted into the music department will have an individual lesson once a week or twice a week if requested. Theory of Music is offered as an extra mural activity. Learners will need to attend these classes to assist them with their practical lessons.

In Art Club, learners get the opportunity to experiment with a wide variety of materials and techniques. Art activities include working with clay, printmaking, figurative drawing, paper mache sculpture, painting and sketching. Each term, learners focus on a different technique or media. The focus is not on creating perfect artworks, but rather on exploration and creative problem solving.
